Michel Tremblay’s well-loved and award winning play brings us the story of one woman, Albertine, at five different times in her life. The older Albertines warn the younger ones of what is to come – ‘Our fate depends on you’, Albertine at 70 says to Albertine at 30. Together, with her sister Madeline the five Albertines provide a moving portrait of the extraordinary life of an ‘ordinary’ woman.
This is a one act production running approximately 90 minutes.
Artists of all backgrounds and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
Albertine at 30 and Albertine at 40
Recently moved from the country to the city, Albertine at 30 and 40 personify a sense of trapped claustrophobia and a yearning for the preindustrial self- determination of the pioneer days exacerbated by fear of the invisible governing powers, and of the judgements of community and church.
Albertine at 50
In the freer atmosphere of the 1960’s, Albertine at 50 experiences how the Youth Culture and fast food consumerism clashes with the more traditional, family-centric culture personified by Madeleine. In 1962, when we meet Albertine at 50, she has adopted the slogan “Maitre chez Nous” (“Master in our home”), and demands of herself to become “Mistress of her own life — and damn the consequences.”.
Albertine at 60
Embodies the emotional backlash that followed the October Crisis and served to diffuse the nationalistic agitation which characterized the sixties. This feeling of having failed, of having been ripped off at some point, betrayed by one’s own, is expressed by Albertine at 60. She has withdrawn, filled with self-disgust, from public affairs. She lives insulated by drugs until she attempts suicide.
Albertine at 70
The referendum of May 1980 saw a majority of the eligible
francophone electorate vote to remain in federal Canada, and Albertine at 70 exhibits the new sense of self-determination, and the self-respect generated by an education curriculum that emphasized Quebec’s distinctive cultural heritage and history.
Madeline
Albertine’s now deceased sister. Interacts with the others as they unravel Albertine’s life.
