Plot Synopsis: The action takes place in the living room of a middle-aged couple, George and Martha, who have come home from a faculty party drunk and quarrelsome. When Nick, a young biology professor, and his mousy wife, Honey, stop by for a nightcap, they are enlisted as fellow fighters, and the battle begins. A long night of malicious games, insults, humiliations, betrayals, painful confrontations, and savage witticisms ensues. The secrets of both couples are laid bare, and illusions are viciously exposed.

Character breakdown:

George – A 46-year-old history professor at a small college in New England. Married to Martha, whose father is the college president. George drinks to excess and is miserably unhappy.

Nick – A professor of biology at the college where George teaches. He is 28 years old, “well put-together, good-looking,” and married to Honey. A new arrival on the faculty, Nick is interested in getting ahead.

Honey – Nick’s wife, age 26, is. She is described as a petite girl, and rather plain. Honey is a “faculty wife,” whose function is to support and further her husband’s career. Her relationship with Nick and fear of adult responsibility have kept her a child.
